The Institute offers specialized thoracic surgical services to nearly 600 patients every year. All types of major surgeries like lung resections, decortication, thoracoplasty, video-assisted thoracic surgery and tracheal surgery are routinely done at the institute. State of the art equipments are used like surgical staplers, ultrasound-based energy devices, digital portable chest drainage systems, advanced cardiac monitors and surgical instruments etc. Surgical outcomes are comparable to the best centers in the world.

The Department offers surgery for a wide spectrum of chest ailments as follows:

  • Lung

o   Lung cancer

o   Benign diseases and tumors of the lung

o   Tuberculosis and its sequalae

o   Parasitic lung diseases such as Hydatid cyst disease

o   Mucor mycosis, aspergilloma and other fungal infections

o   Lung volume reduction surgery for emphysema

  •  Esophageal

o   Esophageal cancer

o   Benign esophageal diseases (including achalasia, benign tumors and strictures)

o   Corrosive esophageal injury

o   Esophageal reconstruction

o   Gastroesophageal reflux

  •  Mediastinum

o   Mediastinal tumors and diseases (including the surgical treatment of myasthenia gravis)

o   Thymectomy

o   Mediastinal LN resection

o   Posterior Mediastinal masses

  • Pleural diseases

o   Pneumothorax

o   Pleural effusions

o   Empyema thoracic

o   Mesothelioma

  • Chest wall

o   Tumors

o   Chest wall deformities like Pectus excavatum

o   Tracheal resection or stent insertion for airway narrowing

o   Sympathectomy for hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating)

o   Plication for diaphragm paralysis/other diaphragmatic disorders

o   Surgical retrieval of endobronchial foreign body

o   Thoracic Trauma

In addition, the Department is an established center of excellence for training in thoracic surgery. Two candidates join the Department every year for DNB accredited Thoracic surgery super specialization training. About 12-20 students come for short term training in thoracic surgery from all over the world. We have had trainees from major institutions like AIIMS, NHI, GB Pant as well as from other countries like Hungary, Bangladesh, Philippines, Afghanistan, Armenia, Nigeria, South Africa, Iraq, Egypt and Malaysia.  The Department is also actively involved in the development of Thoracic surgery in the country and is an active partner in the activities of the Indian Society of Thoracic Surgeons. Recently, the Department launched a special clinic: Difficult to treat Thoracic Surgery Clinic in collaboration with the Society to improve patient management using technical support from Project ECHO India.
